Chapel Porth Perranporth Area
photo

Chapel Porth lies just to the south of St Agnes Head. It is a narrow inlet which opens to a long beach which is only accessible at low tide. Great place for surfing.

High up on the cliffs on either side are mining ruins. Those to the south belong to Great Wheal Charlott and Charlott United. Wheal Charlott was a copper mine.

To the north are the ruins of Wheal Coates. As early as 1692 gunnissing (surface digging) was recorded. It had a chequered history, closing in 1844 but re-opening again by 1855. In 1910 an unsuccessful attempt was made to modernise the mine.

Today the Towanroath shaft, used for pumping, with its part-restored engine house, dominates the cliffs and beach. This image is frequently used as a logo for all that is Cornish, which is a shame as the County has much more to offer than closed copper mines.

A CDROM version of the PhotoTour with over 540 high-quality photos of larger size is available from the Association's shop.
