Charlestown Cornwall
photo

Before the beginning of the 19th century Charlestown was known as West Polmear. In 1790 the population was 9, but eleven years later it had risen to 281 and by 1850 it was over 3,000.

Charleston was built by Charles Rashleigh, a local mining entrepreneur who envisaged it being used to ship out china clay. The harbour behind the lock gates was excavated from the solid rock.

Today Charlestown is home of a number of tallships and the whole place may resemble a film set (note the absence of TV aerials). This is not surprising as Charlestown has been used in numerous TV dramas and films for example, BBC TV's Onedin Line.

A CDROM version of the PhotoTour with over 540 high-quality photos of larger size is available from the Association's shop.
