Not one, but two Holy Wells exist at Holywell. The Trevornick Valley Well lies on what is now the Holywell Bay Leisure Park, but interested visitors are permitted to view the well provided that they walk down from the main car park.
The second well is in a cave at the North end of Holywell beach. From the beach the cave appears as a mere slit. Inside the cave slippery steps lead up to several stepped pools ascending towards a hole in the cave roof. Do not explore the cave alone. Because the cave is filled at high tide, begin your exploration on a falling tide. Take a torch. The cave is marked on OS 1:25000 sheet 1352, grid reference SW766601 and on the National Trust Coastal Properties leaflet No. 7.
Holywell beach is like Crantock in that it is backed by an extensive dune system. Work by the Trust is on-going to re-establish the marram grass which holds the dunes together and prevents wind errosion. The marram only grows if new-blown sand is deposited on the plants, making it a perfect closed-feedback system. [No wind, no errosion, no need to grow.] The grass can grow up to three feet a year.
To the South of Holywell beach lies Penhale Camp. Although a military establishment, the coast path is usually open all the year, though walkers may need to be guided by military personnel while live firing practice is taking place.
