Here at Levant the National Trust and the Trevithick Society have jointly restored to full working order a Cornish beam whim engine which is operated by steam. It is the only working steam beam engine in Cornwall. The engine is Cornwall's oldest, being built by Harvey &Co. of Hayle in 1840. The engine operated until 1935 when the Levant mine closed. It was saved by a group of private individuals who later became the Trevithick Society. This type of engine--a whim--was used for raising ore to the surface. The shaft is 278 fathoms (1 fathom = 6 feet) or 505m.

A CDROM version of the PhotoTour with over 540 high-quality photos of larger size is available from the Association's shop.
