Lyme Regis Dorset
photo

A perhaps unusual feature of Lyme Regis is that it is a famous centre for fossils. Probably the most famous fossil collector of the area was Mary Anning who found the first ichthyosaurus--a fish-lizard about 30ft long. She was paid £23 for it and it can now be seen in the London Natural History Museum. Charmouth has a small fossil museum.

The path between Lyme Regis and Charmouth is very fragile and subject to temporary closures and diversions due to cliff falls. Walkers should pay special attention to notices and avoid going too near the edge where overhangs may be unstable.

From the Sea Front at Lyme Regis you can see the line of the coast marching east and the highest point is Golden Cap 630ft (191m) above sea level, with its distinctive flat-top.

A CDROM version of the PhotoTour with over 540 high-quality photos of larger size is available from the Association's shop.
