The cliff railway links Lynmouth with the town of Lynton 500ft above. The railway is 900ft in length and descends at roughly 1:2. It is water powered; tanks are filled in the upper car to counter the weight of the ascending car.

It was built by Sir George Newnes, a publisher, in 1890. Sir George was also responsible for the construction of the Lynton and Barnstaple narrow-gauge railway, which closed in 1935.

A CDROM version of the PhotoTour with over 540 high-quality photos of larger size is available from the Association's shop.
