Porthminster beach is just one of several fine beaches at St Ives. Like Newquay further north, St Ives was turned into a popular holiday resort by the Great Western Railway, which opened a branch line from St Erth in 1885. Eventually the success of St Ives meant that through services ran direct from Paddington and elsewhere.

The 4.5 mile branch line is still in service, taking many visitors from Lelant `park and ride' as parking in St Ives is almost impossible. The journey into St Ives, with views over St Ives Bay, is one of the best train journeys in southern Britain.

A CDROM version of the PhotoTour with over 540 high-quality photos of larger size is available from the Association's shop.
