Praa Sands West Penwith
photo

There's more to Praa Sands than just the beach; the Americans practised D-Day landings here and one local resident found an entire live pack of ammunition in his house years afterwards! There are three bunkers to explore, one on Castle Drive, one on the eastern end of Praa Sands beach and one on Rinsey Head plus an 18thC wreck that's only exposed at low tide at the eastern end of the beach. A victim of the Welloe Rock. You can also see the remains of a prehistoric forest at low tide on the beach as the whole of the bay stretching out to St. Michael's Mount was once above sea level. The West Cornwall coast line along this stretch is actually a raised beach.

A CDROM version of the PhotoTour with over 540 high-quality photos of larger size is available from the Association's shop.
