The Verne Dorset
photo

Today The Verne is a prison, but it was originally built by convicts between 1860 and 1872 as an impregnable fortress, or citadel, to house 575 men. It was finally abandoned by the military in 1948.

You are able to walk around part of the outer defensive wall of the Verne, from where you get a sense of its true scale. Out to the west there's another fine view of Chesil Bank.

A CDROM version of the PhotoTour with over 540 high-quality photos of larger size is available from the Association's shop.
